Calls for mandatory infection controls in body art industry

For many, body modification is seen as a work of art.

From piercing and tattoos to the more extreme methods of subdermal implants and tongue splitting, the industry has grown.

But following a number of recent incidents, including the death of a New South Wales woman three weeks after she had a plastic snowflake implanted under her skin, the body modification industry has been thrown back into the spotlight.

Now artists from the body piercing and tattoo community are calling on the Government to introduce tougher legislation – such as mandatory infection controls – to protect both qualified artists and the customer.
